It could have been that the Courts were orderly until the Black Road war, and since then, mayhem has ruled as the society tries to rebalance itself.
You're not arguing with the GM since all this nonsense backstory won't matter in the game unless things really go off the rails.

Waits for Kat her savior of the universe growing inside Dio, Theory No longer a theory since she doesn't have it any more. Those vivisectionists knew about it too and now have the embryoinc Saviour of the Universe after trapping Dio. Crazy Kat theory #27

Both Corwin and Merlin are whitewashers. The descirbe their actions in good light and all those who oppose them in bad light. And Merlin is a power monger, he steals Werewindle and a spikard from Brand rooms in Castle of Amber. Never let anything powerfull lying around near him, like for example a Mirror Maze. And the concept within the Fiction was Corwin was lying to Merlin
Who was Merlin trying to impress with his story

Merlin was trying to impress everybody. That's why his story is so disjointed and all powers fall into his lap without his having to harm anyone to claim them.

Merlin does not try to impress someone he tries to justify why he is becoming Kinge of Chaos. Remeber in Corwin books Merlin claim that the one thing he does not want is the rule to Amber as the Chaosians had planed. And now he take the Throne of Chaos. Merlin talking witt Corwin narrating his story, abriged version. "Yead Dad I know I said I'm not intersted in beeing King but see I had no choice." So Sounds like Merlin is trying to explain to his Dad how he didn't take the lessons his dad told him to heart

Don't you mean Kleptomaniac. He's trying to steal the Mirror Maze from me. Didn't tacky tell him he could? Taky told me she was helping him, which is the only way I think he can get it now that Eivor broke it. Unless they have someone with very particular skills. See he's coverting things that belong to someone else! Kat

Game Theory Time!
At this point my assumption is that a long time ago, before any of us were around, and centuries before the Patternfall War, someone or ones, tracked down all of these powers (mirror maze, fountain, Purple mansion, and so on) and found a way to link them all to draw power from them in the form of the Spikards. Merlin found one or two of them in his series, and there were apparently a few more out there. Nine Rings of Power if you will.
My guess someone(s) wants to destroy the Spikards (or weaken their links) by destroying the power sources. Someone(s) else wants to keep them active and powerful so they are trying to claim/capture all the sources of power (like the Mirror Maze) to protect the power sources and links.
So it has become at battle for all these sources of power that the Spikards draw from.
It could be that Merlin wants to capture Eshanta to protect the mirror maze as he has one or two spikards drawing power from it. He couldn't let it just remain free as whoever is trying to destroy the power sources would eventually come along and destroy the mirror maze.
So he is trying to capture Eshanta to place thousands of Chaos troops there to guard the maze.
The chest Vada was after contained a Spikard (or one of its power sources) and now Leonil has it or passed it along to whoever he is working for. My guess is he kept it as one thing I know for sure is that Leonil wants as much power and knowledge as he can get his hands on.

Ooohhhh... Interesting questions. If your character opened the box and saw a Spikard would they keep it? If their liege asked for it would they give it to them? What would it take to make them part with it? Muahahahaha!!!! Oh, sorry my inner GM just came out. I've shoved it back into the box for when I restart my D&D game. Or my Transformers game.
