Nat laughs and picks the fork back up. "You know, I think I'm going to like you Bretton." She takes a bite and continues once swallowed. "Hopefully, your job isn't the end of you." Nat grabs her wine glass and leans back in her chair, studying the man before her. "Since you are to be my bodyguard, tell me about yourself Bretton." She sips her wine. "Tell me why I should trust you. And no easy 'Because your father does.' nonsense either."

#s://i~ibb~co/2tXpDNK/Under-lieutenant-Bretton~jpg Bretton started to say "Because your father does," before Nat finished her sentence. "I don't know if I can rightly say why, ma'am," he replies. "I have served in your father's army for a long time, having left the town of Camaret at sixteen; I didn't want to spend my years fishing when there was so much to see in Paris. I fought in the battles of Girona, Turin, Stuttgart, and Utrecht. I was first to hit the beach in the landing at Plymouth, and after sacking the city, earned my current rank. HQ transferred me to the castle after that." Natalia has heard that all those battles were bloody affairs with a significant number of dead on either side.

"Bloody affairs those battles." Nat says as she takes a bite. "So you've seen your share of fighting. Are you to stay in the room with me at all times?"

#s://i~ibb~co/2tXpDNK/Under-lieutenant-Bretton~jpg "I can't say as that would be entirely appropriate," Bretton says with a slight blush. "Only for meals in your room and for regularly scheduled inspections, the rest of the time, me and my men will be at our guard post next door."

Nat smirks at the blush. "Good to know." She says. She finishes her meal, and pulls out a pack of cigarettes from her robe. She lights one and holds the pack out to Bretton. "How often am I to have regularly scheduled inspections and why am I having inspections at all?"

He declines the offer, and his frown suggests that he disapproves of his little princess taking up smoking.
"Inspections will be twice each day, and the reason is to root out any possible tampering of your things by agents from the Courts of Chaos. Vile creatures always on the prowl looking to bring down good King Corwin and his family."

Nat chuckles. "You don't approve." She states, holding up the cigarette. "I only smoke when stressed." She holds the pack open again, and he can see there are only three missing. "This pack is a month old." She puts it back in the robe's pocket. She sits in silence, thinking as she finishes her cigarette. Nat puts it out, stands, and walks over to stand directly in front of Bretton. "I'd almost suggest he lock the shadow down, so he can control who comes and who goes. It would also make hunting any agents of The Courts that are here easier." She smirks. "But then my father probably thought of that all ready." She turns and goes inside, sitting down on the edge of her bed. She studies him once more before speaking. "Well, you can go tell Dad that all is well. I didn't die of poisoning." She rolls her eyes and then sighs. "I'm going to go to bed. After all, my sleep was interrupted last night."

If he feels reproached by her words it doesn't show in his face or actions.
"There will be two guards in the hall at all times, ma'am," he says as he leaves. "I will relay your message to the King."

Nat nods and waves as he leaves. She paces around her room for a moment before grabbing her bug-out bag from her closet. She double-checks it is still packed and places it on the bed. "Are you going to do this?" Her brain asks as she looks at the location trump. She sighs, puts the bag under her bed. "Let's sleep on it and see what the morning brings." Nat walks to the door and opens it. She looks at the nearest guard. "May I be permitted to go to the library to get a book to read while in solitary?"

"Solitary? We wouldn't put it quite like that, Princess. You are free to travel within the castle."
He blushes then continues.
"If it is companionship you require, I don't see any rule against it. Shall we procure a collection of men from the city for your perusal?"

It's Nat's turn to blush. "That is not at all what I was asking. Have you never heard of sarcasm?" She asks as she stalks past him and heads towards the library. She mentally notes any more differences on her route, which takes her past the throne room.

The place seems the same as the day before. What was once a calm classical palace in the heart of the city has now been transformed into a modern (1920's modern, that is) building with cables, lightbulbs, and radios. The throne room is still filled with rows of radio sets, and leather-clad, masked soldiers talk rapidly into the microphones, listen on the headsets, scribble notes and hand them over to couriers who rush around the room delivering them to other identically clad soldiers at different radio sets. On the dias Corwin and his generals study large maps and discuss their plans. Natalia's father still bleeds from wounds suffered in the battle the day before.

Nat stops outside the throne room and watches her would be father. She notes the bleeding and arches an eyebrow. She doesn't say anything and doesn't move into the room, just hangs out around the door. Nat glances at her entourage. "How fairs my father?" She whispers. "He's still bleeding I see."

"The King tells of battle with a foe who wielded a sword whose wounds can never be healed."

Nat looks at the one who spoke and then back to her father. "So he's dying. Slowly, but still dying." She nibbles her lip, thinking. After a moment she has made up her mind and turns from the door, takes two steps, turns back around and walks into the throne room. She marches up to the dais and hugs her father, tightly.
