"That is a interesting idea. We should make a second list of all the people killed after Swayvile's death and those who recently died, cross out those who were in the line of succession to get those everyone thinks to be collateral damage like Lady Lorcas." She points to Dirks mother. "Or Lady Carloa of Caryx." She frowns shortly. "She was an Greataunt of my cousins Giso and Neres."
"We might be able to see a pattern in the names or see a pointer to the House or person who has the most connection to the dead ones."
"I hope that the pairing of Oberon and Swayville does not repeat, for Merlin and for the Courts."

"I hope not, too. But it might explain why Merlin is slow to officially take the throne; he might be waiting until Amber announces a King and estimates their probable lifespan. He'll probably run the calculation with one of his computer things.
"If we can't find a pattern to the murders, then the killers have also been striking at random (not the king) to hide the evidence."
He flips through the pages of his book after opening it to the front. He begins to chuckle.
"Ha, I almost forgot about this. Remember the Hellmaidens? You might not have been around then. The Courts' crack team of our greatest women warriors. My mom descended from one of them; she was even in the group in those last few years before it wound down. We might need to revive the organization if this Corwin war drags on much longer."

"There are people who say that Swayvil died because of Eric's curse. Getting the wording of the curse would be useful. Corwin knows, Gerard was there, some nobles. I have to recall if anybody else of the siblings and who the nobles were."
"If it was the curse Merlin should be safe."
"So what you say means there was no coronation yet?"
Maeve looks ate the pages he flips through and makes note. "Killing at random. An option to cover his trace an still unraveling connections."
"Has House Hendrake enough women left? Or make it a small band across Houses to create new bounds?"

#s://i~ibb~co/HtyfnC2/despil~png He nods in agreement. "If we are lucky, it was just that the Courts would lose the war, or Swayvill's life was tied to Oberon's. No, Eric had thought Oberon dead at that time, so the dead Kings might be something greater than a curse. A cosmic principle to keep the Courts of Chaos and Amber in balance, maybe? If his curse was to destroy the Courts, then we could be due for serious trouble. It could be that the curse enabled Corwin to create that second pattern.
"Merlin? Coronation? No, not yet. He's dragging his heels, probably still trying to line up enough Houses behind him and waiting for this Corwin war to end.
"His trace?" Delwin asks.

"Without the wording of the curse we are guessing. And Corwin might not be in the mood to tell. The second pattern is a problem and but I think it is also a problem for Amber."
"His or her traces, the one responsible for some of the killings. Could be the one called 'The Hidden One'. And no I do no think Merlin is responsible. Yes he will remove his enemies and now after he has taken the throne he will defend it. But all the killings before it does no feel like something your brother would do."

#s://i~ibb~co/HtyfnC2/despil~png "You didn't grow up with him like we did. I don't know if there's anything he wouldn't do to kick things out of his path. Sure, he'd complain, show remorse about the necessity, and wish there was another way to get what he wants, but don't let that fool you he'll glad crush anything or anyone in his path without hesitation if he thinks he can get away with it.
"The Maidens began recruiting widely after Benedict wiped most of them out. Lintra was one of the few to make it out alive and managed to get a gift from Benedict out of it. From then on, daughters and other suitable candidates got the option to join. It lost something of its cachet when almost anyone could get in. Julian put an end to the second iteration though some still talk of bringing it back. You could restart it, invite Gilva, and have her lead the regiment acting as Merlin's bodyguards. That'll get them close."

"Sound like is taking after his father." Maeve replies.
"An all female bodyguard, sounds like a good idea. Gilva and I would have to set up some criteria who qualifies and who not. And Merlin will benefit that he does not have to worry about a cold bed. You will be uncle in no time." She grins.

#s://i~ibb~co/HtyfnC2/despil~png Despil groans. "If Merlin has closely taken after his father and gets Gilva in a motherly way, then I fear for the little monster they'll add to the family. Keep looking in those books for some distant relative I can join with to get away from the demon child!"

"You could apply and become Lord Suhuy's apprentice. But then you would me most likely responsible for training the little monster."
"We could make a tour of the Black Zone improving the relationship between the Courts and Black Zone members. You would be away from the little monster and your brother could not complain, since you are doing the crown's work."

#s://i~ibb~co/HtyfnC2/despil~png "Being his apprentice would be even worse, and that's before the little monster gets old enough to train. The Black Zone is still too close. We'd have to go further out into Shadow. Keep of the Four Worlds? Ygg? That Eshanta place? Your hometowns?"

"Okay when Merlin and Gilva get a little monster we make a tour through shadow, so around Ygg, which should equally far enough from the Courts and Amber."
"If the situation in Amber gets solved till then I will take you there and Rebma. So be warned my Aunt Queen Moire is not very fond of Chaos Lords after my father seduced my mother."
Anything so far in the book that gives a clue about Dio?

#s://i~ibb~co/HtyfnC2/despil~png A few options present themselves. Not everyone was confident that the armies of Amber would be destroyed at the final battle, and some of the nobles got some revenge before the fight. Lord Wixxen of Helibore was killed by his brother Kristos before the fighting started. Kristos then married his brother's widow. The fate of Wixxen's young children is not known and Helibore refuses to discuss it. Lord Richon the hunchback killed his older brother Henk and then Henk's two children who are said to be walled up in Helibore fortress, though some say a good maid smuggled the twins out before Richon could kill them. "The Serpent's balls! Hide!" Despil says burying his head in the great tome and ducking down. "It's Bella Jesby! Don't let her see us."

Maeve looks surprised for a moment and then joins Despil hiding behind the big book and its single book desk.
"What is wrong." She whispers.

It didn't work out like they hoped, and the splitting up wasn't pleasant. She is supposed to be off invading Amber or somewhere."He crouches even lower and is prepared to crawl under the table once Bella passes by.

"I will distract her. The park next to Thelbane, we meet at the fountain where we pushed Jurt in, when he was sneaking after us." Maeve whispers to Despil.
She slips out and walks over to Bella, making sure she blocks Bella's line of sight to Despil.
"Lady Bella, how nice to see you . It is been ages. I hope all is fine for you."
