Outside the cottage waits a carriage shaped like a globe with a crown of rays sculpted into it. Four pure white mares stand ready to pull. The maitre d' sits on the high seat, whip in hand, sweating uncomfortably in his silver tuxedo and top hat. Twenty honour guards stand at attention, all similarly dressed in silver and red and carry blunted halberds.
"Oh Queen, if you will come aboard, we will transport you to your subjects," the man says.

Eivor looks at the carriage snorts contemptuosuly and scowls.
"I doubt those overtly preened horses ever did a real days work in their lives and I most certainly and not a Queen. I'm not even a Princess. Trust me, my father knows horses and he certainly passed that knowledge down to his daughter. If I have to go to this farce of a ball then I'll walk there."
Kat of course would have loved to ride in the carriage, but she is Eivor now and she's been around the Goddess for long enough to know how she thinks that she would react.

The maitre d' is flustered by Kat's answer, or his face is turning red from the intense heat of the day.
"Madam, I assure you that the title of Queen is legitimate for this day only, so you need not concern yourself with further obligations after the night is through. To refuse the carriage ride is just not done; the Queen of the Sun is, by tradition, carried to the cotillion in this conveyance. As a representative of Amber, you would not wish to disgrace our fine traditions, would you?"

"Its a new tradition, starting now. Traditions have to get started sometime." Eivor tells the Maitre D'. "You can call it an act of humbleness or whatever other way you want to spin it, but I'm not riding in that. And woe betide anyone who uses my incorrect title and calls themselves a subject. My Aunt would have a fit if she thought I was practising being a Queen when she's about to be crowned. Oh and Lady Simone is not to be disturbed by anyone. She's taken a draft and is trying to sleep off her cold."
Besides, how are all the people going to see my lovely dresss if I'm buried away in that thing? Kat thinks to herself.
With that she hikes up the front of her dress so that it doesn't trail on the ground and get dirty, before starting to walk towards the noise of the party.

The man tugs at his too tight collar uncomfortably while the guards - busboys and maintenance workers forced into uncomfortable outfits and made to carry supposed halberds - shuffle their feet.
"Now, miss, it is a ways to the ball and uncomfortable to walk in this heat. Think of how your hair will respond to the heat and humidity. And, if I may be permitted to speak of such an indelicate subject - your sweat after such an exertion (excuse the insinuation but I speak only to protect your appearance and reputation, madam.)" he says in a last effort to dissuade her.

Eivor turns to the maitre d' as she walks, as she certainly isn't stopping.
"I walk all the time and am quite used to doing it. If you think my father has servants carry him all around Arden then you obviously don't know him." Kat begins. She doesn't either, but she read the account in the book that Eivor let her read and he really did not seem the type.
"And yes I will sweat. We all do it and its certinly nothing to be embaressed about. Indeed its a perfectly natural process. If Lady Simone had not persuaded me otherwise, I'd have been attending this farce in my armour. As to my reputation, I'll settle scores with anyone who wants to try and sully it with my fists."
Fortunately I was Lady Simone at the time and I pursuaded myself quite easily!
She continues walking in the direction of the party, enjoying winding up the maitre d' in her guise as Eivor.

"Of course, the Prince would not do so when travelling in the great forest wilderness, but this is civilization, and we comport ourselves in a more civilized manner," the man huffs and Kat suspects that even with the generous tips he earns in his job he is reaching his wit's end having to deal with the spoiled brats of the aristocracy.
They walk and walk and come to an open plaza on the shore of the island. Many dozens of guests have already arrived, and waitstaff glide among them carrying silver trays containing drinks and canapes. A band plays dance tunes on one stage, and a second stage is set for the crowning of the new queen. Kat sees Katie and Chad among the guests, each with a flute of champaign in their hands and laughing at some joke being told by a third member of their group.

Kat internally is loving winding up the maitre d', but here there are more important things to be getting on with. She needed to find out more about Coy and what he was up to so as to prove her worth to the Gods and Goddesses so they would help Eshanta.
Normally she would have taken a flute of Champagne herself, but here she was not herself. She looks around for a platter with some ale on it and if she doesn't see what she is looking for, she snags one of the waiters and asks.
"Do you actually do a proper ale here by any chance? I figure I'm going to need a good stiff drink at this shindig."
Having procured her ale, Kat will let the maitre d' have his fun and steer her where he wants her to be. Now doubt to crown her or some or such nonsense. The quicker that she can get that over with, the quicker that she can get on with her interrogations.

A waiter rushes towards Kat, carrying a silver tray bearing a single flute of champagne. Hearing her request for ale, he quickly turns on his heel and goes back to the bar, then returns with a flagon of ale.
Upon seeing her members of the crowd bow, whether due to her being royalty from Amber or Queen of this place, she can not tell. Katie sees her and begins to make a series of surreptitious gestures that are supposed to indicate that she is on the case.
The maitre d' leads her to the stage and she comes to realize the shabbiness of the place - the throne built for her is plywood sloppily painted, the man and guards dress in ill-tailored clothes, the lights are dim from lousy bulbs, all seems to be a desperate attempt by those who run this place to cater to the idle rich and the rich in turn use this place in a desperate attempt for publicity or to pawn their children off on other families. Even the ale is less than adequate.
The man makes a speech about tradition and the beauty of Eivor and the assembled crowd claps, the parents hovering on the edge of the throng more than the youths and the tiara is placed on Kat's head. The band starts up their music again, this time a more formal dancing song and the young men get in line to take their turns dancing with Kat.

Kat realises that this is a set made for a performance to keep the aristocrats amused. Everything is fake. She wonders if the Lords and Ladies here are as fake.
Before she starts the dancing she decides to make a little speech.
"I started a new tradition this year by having the Queen show that she is humble by walking herself to the event. I will be starting a new rule this year on top of that. Whatever the Queen asks you when you are dancing with her you have to answer truthfully."
As she dances with the various gentlemen she asks them what they know about Coy. She will be quite insistent not to talk about her beauty and other nonsense and instead questions them about Lady Simone's brother. Since she has both physical contact and eye contact, she quite unashamedly proceeds to rummige through the minds of her dance partners for anything they are concealing about Coy and his plot. By focussing the talk on Coy, she hopes that those thoughts will br brought to the surface, even if they are trying to conceal them. She takes note of the names and titles of all who have interesting information that they tell willingly or try to conceal.
This, Kat decides is perhaps the most efficient way of getting around all the males at the party. Of course, she will still need to check the women there too.

Kat learns that the men at this party come in four types: the romantics, whose minds are full of thoughts of marriage to the Lady Eivor; the greedy, who think to impress her with talk of their family estates and riches but whose minds are filled with thoughts of the income a royal Amberite could bring; the despotic, who view Eivor as a means to gain great power; and the confidence-men, a few guests who have no riches or family connections but have tricked their way into Golden Sands. From those minds, she learns the value of all the jewelry being worn at the party and all the best ways to remove it surreptitiously.
Talking of Coy brings thoughts of jealousy in all the men except the connivers, who are relieved not to have to talk their way out of a marriage proposal from her. Thoughts are mostly of how Coy was always stuck to Simone, which leads to another fit of jealousy. From their minds and discussions, she learns that Coy did alter the minds of some to make them find excuses not to pursue Simone, that he was an excellent actor and a master of disguise, he tried to get them involved in some business deals that never were completed, and that he had connections in the entertainment industry and could, for a price, introduce the men to Hollywood producers and directors.

Is Coy my evil twin? Kat thinks to herself. After all he is an expert at disguise, acting and bending minds. It seems that he really has something for Simone, which was perhaps why he insinuated himself into her family. But why then did he let her go off and marry a Lord of the Amber, the home of the Gods? Was it something that was part of his plan or did he err in letting her go? Surely he must have been invited to her Wedding?
Kat makes a note of those who have tricked their way into the Goden Sands. She probably owes the maitre 'd something for putting him through hell, and those who are not of any means looking to rob guests may well be of interest to him.
Then Lady Eivor, having finished her dances goes to get her drink and finds Katie and asks her to introduce her to the other ladies at the party. A litte gently touch on the shoulder and some intent staring whilst listening when she probes about Coy and she sorts through the minds of the ladies, having already completed the gentlemen. Kat is careful that Lady Eivor has no more than two ales as she wants to keep her wits about her.
Throrughness is of course necessry in these types of investigtions and this is only stage two of three. This place has a number of staff and she wonders if perhaps Coy has perhps co-opted, or maybe twisted the minds of some of them.

Interrogating the women is a more difficult job. Unlike the men who lined up to dance with Kat, the women are in smaller groups and she senses the jealousy and spite directed at her from them. Even Katie hides a deep well of animosity and Kat can tell she was to be the Sun Queen until Eivor barged into the resort at the last minute.
In time she does pass through the groups and finds certain thoughts dominating their minds: some only contain the jealousy and spite, others are more calculating and evaluate all Kat has done and who she will probably pick and how that changes the delicate network of friendships and expected betrothals and how they will fit in and can take advantage of the new status quo, every glace by Kat towards anyone is more information for their scheming. The third type are also confidence tricksters, some in league with the men, others solo and looking to score off a rich young lord.
Of Coy there isn't too much that's new. He doted on Simone with occasional attempts to coerce the girls into paying him for a chance to become famous. There are a few memories of Simone rejecting Coy in public and small spats between them.
The longer she takes working through the women, the more she can't help overhearing grumbles from the parents in attendance of how she is not following protocol and wasting everyone's time talking to the girls instead of finding a mate. This supposed social blundering by Eivor does give Katie a glow of satisfaction and vindication.

None of them need worry about who she's going to pick, since as she's posing as Eivor she cannot really make any promises in that regard. Kat wouldn't have chosen any of them anyway, not that she's ever really considered such a thing in the past. She had to grow up as independent as possible in the palace and relied on her own skills and wits. She'd always seen love being used as a weapon to the unlucky enough to fall into its snares and she'd decided that such complications were best avoided. Of course that didn't preclude having relations with men, but as long as she ensured that she hadn't been suckered into the love trap she knew she was good. There seemed to be no danger in that here from what she'd seen.
Kat felt a bit sorry for Katie and determined to do something nice for her before this farce was over, but for now she was still formulating the format of that largesse. Extracting herself from the women for a while Lady Eivor turned to find the maitre d'. If anyone knew about the likely comings and goings of Coy then it would be him. She pulled him aside.
"I need to know about Lady Simone's brother Coy." She said to him bluntly looking deeply into his eye and mind. "Other than Lady Simone herself, who else did he interact with here, whether it be guest or staff I don't care?"

"Coy? Coy? You wish to be betrothed to Coy?" The man splutters "if so you should have attended last year or the year before but to be honest I don't think that you are his type."
The murmurs of the crowd increase as Eivor moves her attentions from the women to the staff.
"When here hiscattention is all upon his sister and he seems to ignore all else. Once that son of Feldane met her and took her to a party in Amber, Coy stormed off and hasn't returned since.
