"Sadly I haven't had much opportunity to play these last many years. It could be that you have now surpassed me in skill."
"I still don't have much to do with the King and those close to him. Gerard and Benedict are fine as always but most of the others..."
He doesn't finish the sentence but he doesn't have to. Dorian is well aware of how his uncle and cousin died during Corwin and Bleys' invasion of Amber long ago. Even Gerard was on the Chantris shit-list until ruled Amber during the war, defended her against invaders before Random's return and fell in love with Dorian's mother.
"I imagine it all has to do with that explosion in the castle a few years back; things have been rebuilt but it never has been quite the same. Probably something to do with that damned family fighting amongst each other again.
"But princess Llewela is something different. Not a bickerer like the others, just quietly gets things done. She came to me with a request to assist in military planning for Rebma and I have done some consulting with Queen Moire these last few years."
He pats the book in his hand.
"This is a history of Rebma's wars. Interesting to see how things are done differently under the sea.
"Your mother is fine; still a master of sword and spear and the finest cavalier this side of Prince Julian."
He puts the book aside.
"Those Deigans also wish to have my advice on military matters. Stay if you wish but I have always known that your interests lay elsewhere."

Stay if you wish but I have always known that your interests lay elsewhere." "You're absolutely right", replies Dorian, "but I've also matured during my wanderings. It's probably time for me to share family concerns. I mean, you've always been there for Mother and I. Eaglesign is my home port, perhaps more than any other place, and i want you to know that you can count on your grandson to back you up." says Dorian, looking Lord Chantris straight in the eyes. "Even for those boring military things" Dorian laugh. Dorian turns and points to a corner of the room, near the imposing black marble fireplace. "Don't worry, i won't bother you. I just thought i'd sit in that comfy chair back there and listen to you two talk. To learn. And spend some time in your company". Having said that, he takes out a pencil and some paper and carelessly puts it on the chair in the corner.

"As you please," Lord Chantris says kindly. "And when we are done here you may wish to go to the castle and see how the other half of your family are doing."
He sends the butler to bring some wine and bread and cheese while waiting for the guest.

" If procol dictates. I suppose I should at least make a curtsy to the King and Queen? Although if it can wait, I'd prefer to reunite with Mother first".
Dorian then wait for the guest(s).

a short time later the guest arrives. Dorian does not hear the knock at the door or Rolf's answering but the visitor's voice fills the air.
"Hoo-weee, you get some great storms 'round these parts! I was going to send a message and reschedule this meeting but then I thought 'Well the messenger will have to brave this storm so why don't I just go anyways!' Nearly ran my horse off the road a couple of times in that wind! If these are your gentle rains of spring I don't want to be around during the winter.
"Gimme a minute or two to dry off before meeting the Lord a' this manor and bring me something to warm up the old insides, eh?"
Rolf's response is inaudible to those in the library.
A few minutes later the Begman is shown in.
"Howdy! I'm Coy from Begma. You must be Lord Chantris himself! And who's this, a son? No... grandson. I'll bet that you are Dorian, yeah?"
Coy holds out a hand in greeting.

« I didn’t know I was so popular!»
Dorian gets out of the chair and calmly approaches with a smile.
« Nice to meet you, Coy from Begma,» he says, reaching out his bare hand to the man. Dorian had plenty of time to concentrate hismelf on this moment, and while doing the few steps to reach the plenipotentiary, he opens his mind to the environnment, searching intuitively for any potential threats.
He then warmly grasps the man’s hand, planting his gaze into his own, and tries to establish a contact.
Dorian intends to read the superficial thoughts of the man and gather personal informations, the way he knows his aunt Fiona would do. But he also knows that this Coy is likely sensitive enough to feel the rude intrusion. So, Dorian only prepares to it, if his first impression is negative enough.

"Ah hell, look at me makin' a fool a' myself bein' so familiar in all,"Coy says. "We had all been so excited about meeting your grandfather here that we naturally asked about his family history and of the many great warriors of Chantris. Your name and picture were on our list."
The man seems genuinely friendly from his speech and mannerisms. It would take the risk of delving deeper into his mind to learn more.

"No biggie". Dorian relaxes when he hears Coy's friendly tone, and continues with an amused smile: "Unlike my aunts and uncles, I've never been on anyone's list, and yours seems perfect for an opening. And far less disturbing."
"You"re welcome" says Dorian as he goes back to his seat, to let Lord Chantris talk to Coy.
While he is expecting a delegation from Deiga and more guests, Dorian begins a sketch of the scene, to immortalize the moment.

Delegate Coy has brought a tube of scrolled maps for Lord Chantris and the two of them settle into an hour-long discussion of Deiga and how best to defend her shadow paths and cities. Coy displays a keen mind for military tactics but Chantris is his better and develops many improvements to the Deigan military. They then spend half an hour discussing trade deals involving Chantris horses and Deigan crops.
when done Coy gives his friendly goodbyes to the Lord and Dorian.
"So, what did you think of our visitor? Chantris asks, "A strangely friendly one, no?"

"Exactly, a friendly man with a peculiar accent. Friendly, and simple i would say. Very refreshing, especially in Amber. I should take a trip to Begma sometime." Dorian gets up and stretches.
"Well, the time doesn't seem too late. After all, i was thinking going to the Palace today. Would you care to join me? You're probably tired from the meeting, but getting some fresh air is good for you, too."
Dorian opens the door, then stops. "Unless, of course, you have other obligations".

There is a loud sound before Lord Chantris can respond. Similar to thunder but not the same.
"That sounds like war but with weapons not available in Amber," he says rising from the chair.

The powerful detonation makes the windows of the room vibrate. Dorian flinched for a moment when it rang, his hand tetanized on the doorknob. But his mind regains the upper hand almost instantly, and coldly analyzes the information at its disposal, scanning the field of possibilities. The sound of a cannon announcing an attack from the sea? Powder doesn't work in Amber as far as he knows. The explosion of an overheated steam engine? Dorian hasn't seen any of them on his few visits to Amber, no boat, no train. An explosion in Castle Amber, like the one that happened before?
« The Palace! » shouts Dorian, crossing the doorway and going down the stairs four at a time to the street. He turns his head right and left, looking for the sign of a rush in the City, a plume of smoke on the harbour or elsewhere. Then he quickly heads for the Castle, to have a clear view of it, certain in his heart of hearts that the source of the evils of Amber still resides in his family. At the top of the stairs, he glances back to see if Lord Chantris or Rolf had followed in his footsteps. Dorian looks for a sign of unrest, or a catastrophe in the castle, grasping his deck of Trumps mechanically without taking his eyes off the building.

It is only a few steps along the street to where there is a clear view of the castle. Dorian sees a large plume of purple energies radiating from a side of the castle. The street is nearly empty in this time of heavy rain but the few people outside runabout in panic.
"That came from inside the castle. Chantris says, "Yet maybe prelude to attack."
He leaves to prepare the defence of the mansion.

Dorian gives an affirmative sign to Lord Chantris, but both are already absorbed in their respective tasks. He hurries towards the purple smoke, thinking he can help possible victims. And also see damage or signs of an attack. "Speaking of an attack, who's in charge of the defences now?" thinks Dorian as he runs. "Benedict or Gerard probably."
Approaching the Castle, he takes a short break and goes through his cards. Arriving at Gerard's image, he stops, expires noisily, worried, then takes out Benedict's one. He touches the Trump and concentrates on the feeling of cold trying to make contact with the one he feels is most competent to repel an assault. Or at least know something. "Come on, pickup".

There is no response from Benedict.
