Well, there seems to be just enough time before the demon above actually comes in. With the conductor at least temporarily neutralized, Brennon uses his unbroken hand to fish out Hammett's trump and attempt to activate it. (He only has the trumps Hammett has made for him, so it shouldn't be difficult to separate the right one.) He'll wrap his forearom around the unconscious conductor, in case the man or automaton or whatever is able to be saved, and drag the two of them to a more defensible position in the car. If there's time to take a quick swipe of the revivified substance under the chair with his handkerchief he will, and stuff it in his pocket, but if not, then defense and getting the trump to work are more important.
[ooc: sorry my late response might cause scheduling conflicts with other scenes, on the other hand with how long he spent investigating the rooms in the car, maybe it really has been all night re:Hammett and Renault]

[OOC: the train did leave in the very early morning and give an hour or so of poking around then the timing of this might work out.]
Collection the man and the stain sample is made easier by the sound of fighting from the roof of the train. There may even be enough time to grab the gun. "Let me look."
"No I punched the hole so I get to look. You go and break a window or something."
"We are not supposed to break the windows. Or the roof either."
"We're demons, we can't just walk in through the doors!"
The sounds of punching and slapping start up again. And in a minute a large, scaly, frog-like leg kicks through a car window.
A different eye peers through the hole.
"Let our conductor go!" says one.
a large scaley head wearing an engineers cap peers through the broken window.
"And pay for the damage to this car."

[Yup, still trying the trump.. They talk enough, Brennon will know once they finally get in. Ignoring the gun and the demands of the demons.]

Brennon is on the other end of the trump, his right forearm wrapped under the arms of a man in train service uniform, and whose face is a bloodied mess.
"Hammett? I finally found someone whose head is as hard as my fist. There's demons trying to tear into this car, and I have the guy who did the murders, but we're both going to need some medical attention. Him more than, me; I had to be a bit rough. I don't want to stay on this train where it's going, and I don't want to try jumping it with a broken hand. Since the man's unconscious, does that mean you can bring us both through?" No mention yet of the reason for the demons' presence. Yes, Gerard wanted the papers, but if they aren't concealed on the conductor somewhere, they're certainly secreted somewhere safe, and Gerard can get them himself if the conductor lives to be interrogated.

"Well we best not waste anytime."
Hammett reaches out his hand and pulls Brennon and his prisoner through to Renault's office. Hammett cuts the Trump as soon as they are through, then looks over them both, making sure Brennon's injuries aren't life threatening. Seeing that they are not...
"Good work."

Coming into the room the Conductor falls to the floor with a thump. He gives out a groan and mutters something about the dining car.
Renault jumps to his feet and exclaims "Sacre Bleu!" He comes from behind his desk to look at the Conductor.
"You were not wrong about the magic. What's the deal with him? Should I call the medics?"

"Handcuffs first, if you please."
Hammett will let Brennon fill the Police Chief in once he has caught his breath.

Renault presses a button on his desk. a moment later another of the gendarmes comes in and handcuffs the Conductor. When done Renault waves the policeman out of the room.

"I had to hit him a couple of times, for my own safety," Brennon says, pulling the folded handkerchief out of his pocket and placing it on Renault's desk, along with his white gloves. It is clear that his right hand is injured, but not how badly. "I usually only have to hit someone once to put them out. I'm not sure what damage two hits did, but it did a number on my hand. If you could strip the conductor's gloves from him, Hammett? He fired at me, and if you can trace the powder evidence, it may help clear the Policeman's conscience." Self-defense whas a usually acceptable reason for hitting someone, wasn't it?
He addresses his next comments to Inspector Renault (title?) directly. Not quite as if making a report to a superior. No one was superior to Captain Brennon, of course. Just making a 'casual' report.
"He likes to talk about his own cleverness; he confessed to the murders himself, once I found traces of the congealed Ether under the chair the men had been sitting on. It is water soluble, and rehydrates violently, as I found to my cost despite my care." He gestures at the folded handkerchief with his gloves. "He has seen whatever papers are being sought, and said they were in no language known to man, which I assume means it's not from this shadow. Since he had at least two demon henchmen ripping their way into the car when I came around, I decided it was more important to take him alive for questioning than to find the papers myself. If they're not on him, he'll know where they were stashed. He seemed insulted that I would think he knew so little as to throw them off the train or dispose of them as rubbish."
"I know we've had our differences, <Inspector> Renault, but you mut admit that I at least know my way around a crime scene." Though more often from a different angle, of course. "If you have someone to take notes, I can list the condition of everything in the entire car. If you insist on having me write it out myself, I would need a surgeon to see to my hand before I can hold a pen properly." Brennon isn't actually asking for surgery, instead using the naval term for a ship's doctor from habit.

While Brennon gives his statement Hammett does a thorough pat down and search of the conductor, looking not only for the papers but also any ID, cash or coins, bits of paper or notes, weapons or anything else unusual about the man or his clothing. Hammett ears pick up when Brennon mentions the demons assisting the conductor, but he'll save those questions for when he and Brennon have more privacy.

#s://i~ibb~co/fDNQtv2/tumblr-inline-of5oqg4-Qx61sss5ih-640~png Hammett: The Conductor carries on him nothing unusual for this time and place; coins and bills from Morrocco, Algeria, and European countries, which is not unheard of when working in the transport industry. His ID names him as Roman Portier originally from Marseille. He mutters dazedly about cartage fees and railroad gauges while being searched. Brennon: The (yes) Inspector takes Brennon's story remarkably well for a simple shadow-man only raising his eyebrows in surprise at the mention of 'shadows'. "So that's what you call them, eh? Shadows? And they are populated by demons? My Catechism teacher would be so relieved and horrified to hear of it. And these demons are now entering our 'shadow' by way of these paths on which Gerard and the others sail?He looks at the Conductor. "I shouldn't be surprised that this one is a spy, they are thick on the ground in Kasaba these days. I would consider myself lucky if I knew of ten percent of the sneaks working in this town. It seems that every nation has a few dozen of the type poking about, sending messages, knifing each other in the dark alleys.
Still, he always seemed so conscientious about the railway and his position in its hierarchy and status in the towns along its route. I guess you never can tell, eh?"

Hammett finishes his search of the prisoner. "Papers aren't on him. You said, he said that he wouldn't throw them away. That means they must still be on the train. Probably hidden, which is good for us. Let's get him fixed up and talking sense. Then Gerard can get him talking, one way or another, and maybe other agents in Oran can retrieve them."

Brennon doesn't have any more comments at this time. He lays his damaged hand on Renault's desk and begins assessing the actual damage, seeing what can be done without waiting for the medics to come and help him realign the bones in his hand. Time can be critical in reducing swelling and making sure things heal quickly, and the conductor will certainly need helped first.

Hammett is also waiting for the medics to arrive.
