Excerpts from Voices of Patternfall: A Collection of Unedited Testimonials of the Forces of Castle Amber during the Patternfall War, a book by Captain Darius Arsenault, released to modest acclaim and even more modest reviews:
“It was in that first real move towards war footing that King Eric asked Prince Benedict to bring more officers of different types of war to the Castle to broaden the army’s perspective. That’s how we got Marshall Collingsworth, the Tunnel Brigade, and Prince Jacob (although, no one knew he was Prince Jacob at the time - he didn’t walk the pattern until months later)...”
- Robillard, Captain of the Castle Guard (ret.)
“Well, we were really just engaged in home defense, yeah? Always looking over our shoulders for the Begmans to try and steal Eregonar again, but the demonic incursions demanded our closer attention those days. I remember one time - our commander had met with some “unofficial officer” Princeling or other - Jacob, I think his name was, though he looked older than most of the Castle Amber family. Anyway, not two days after that meeting, the commander marches us up a road towards Eregonar - maybe it was the Begmans. But no, it was a band of demons who’d gotten separated out of their little Black Road. We fell on them like madmen - lots of us had lost loved ones in that Black Road. Interrogation later showed that one of their officers had gotten some bad information about possibly snaring a Princess of Amber out in that wasteland. Lucky for us, I guess…”
- Rafe, Lance Corporal in the Kashfa 2nd Infantry Battalion.
