There is some grumbling among the crew; what happened to the first man brought below decks? Why will the second say nothing of what happened? Where is the other member of the ship's crew when they are about to begin another perilous trip through shadow?
Dirk interprets the chart and leads the ship into the last path . This is the worst, most difficult path yet. Who knows where the love of the Unicorn goes when the waves turn minutes to hours? About suppertime, the old cook came on deck and said, 'Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya.' Later in the day, when a hatch gave way, he said, 'Fellas, it's been good to know ya.' Dirk sees a mast and rigging rip off and drag three sailors into the ocean. Four others are swept away when great waves wash over the deck, nearly foundering the ship.
Being so busy trying to keep the ship afloat and on course, they almost fail to realize that they no longer feel the stink of salt spray. They are now travelling on fresh water, although that doesn't change the intensity and horror of the storm!
At long last, the storm breaks, and they find the Lady Millie has heaved up on the rock of an unknown shore. A short beach of black rocks ends in a five-meter tall cliff of dirt and grass. Along the cliff's edge are ruins of stone walls dotted with statues, most of which are broken. The carvings on the wall and the general design remind them of Ovid's tales of the shadow he grew up in. Monarch butterflies fill the air around them, and some land on the ship. One of the statues is of Deirdre dressed in hummingbird feathers, a ring of which form a halo around her head. All around is a jungle of green and orange plants. The sky is lime green, the clouds brown. The sulphurous smell of volcanic ash is in the air.
A small group of people look down on them from the top of the walls. Some are dressed in the clothing and armour they recognize from Amber and the Golden Circle, others in odd butterfly-styled armour, most in a haphazard combination of both.
