The event wraps up, leaving a few hours to rest before the party. Eivor escapes to her rooms without incident.
Kat hears much of the same talk as yesterday. Still, with the shock of Gerard's death passing, the conversation leans more toward the navy - opinions on Calvera's fitness to be Admiral (mixed opinions), the need for more ships (all are in favour), the business of ropemaking and the need to refurbish the city's ropewalk (all in favour especially when there is money to be made and Chatham's ropes are inaccessible from Shadow), lumber for the ships (mixed here as even some of the most rapacious investors and merchants balk at cutting down the trees of Arden or Garnath). Levying or impressing the poor of the city into this new fleet is considered good practice by all.
Some also talk of King Rinaldo and his command of Arden's Rangers (mixed), the need for revenge against Lady Vada and Kasaba (combined), and Princess Flora's expansion of noble estates into the lands surrounding Kolvir (great approval). Dorian's mother, the Lady Chantris, has difficulty sitting through the funeral, twisting and stewing like a caged tiger, and can not sit through the meal but paces up and down the room while the other guests dine and talk.

Kat has met Calvera and knows first hand of his rashness and testosterone fuelled rages. Her opinions of his management of their battle against the pirates reflects some of the naysayers. After all it was Princess Lorelei's spell that really did all the damage and Calvera had no hand in that.
Other subjects were not so interesting, but useful. It was the same story back home. Rich empowered nobles wanting more of their own lot, despite being at the top of the pile anyway. She listens carefully to the opinions on King Rinaldo and wonders what consequences expanding the nobles estates into the surrounding land will bring. There would have been reasons for not doing this before and no doubt much of this was common land where the commoners of the city grazed their animals in the past. Giving it to the nobles will no doubt anger the common folk of the city, though she could see why there would be universal approval amongst this group.
Gerard's widow cuts a lonely figure. Kat would like to go and help in some way, but she really doesn't know how she can help with the woman's loss. No doubt she is fretting about her son also, whom the others are hopefully rescuing from Lady Vada. However there is still little she can do except a few brief words as she departs.
"Hopefully the group sent to shadow will find your son and they will bring him back soon." She says to the bereft woman, sympathetically.

The woman gives Kat a smile and gives her a grip on the shoulder. Her eyes are red and she looks beyond exhausted but still stands tall, stiff-backed, like all the proud children of Chantris.

[OOC - Lets get on with the party. The mountain climbers can always turn up unfashionably late and incur Flora's ire]
Kat will head back to her rooms and get ready for the party, a little sad for Lady Chantris.
