The dead body is of a man dressed in archaic clothing. A knife is plunged into his back. In one hand he holds a letter.
Brian, do you still want to go through the door or wait to see more about the dead guy?

By some strange coincidence, the envelope is addressed to Brian, King of Ayalos. Inside is an invitation to the feast and ball celebrating Princess Flora's ascension to ruling in Amber. The event is planned for three days from now, and she adds a postscript asking him to bring along his wife and Lady Shelly if she is still in his company.

"Well......I have questions. Lets find out if the people in the building have answers."Before I open the door I look at the Raven. "I am certain she set me up now." I take a moment to listen at the door. Once I get a rough sense of where the people are on the other side I sneak in as best I can. Taking a moment to look through the door as its cracked to assess the situation.

In a basement in Kasaba, a man's dead body dressed in archaic clothing, an invitation to Princess Flora's ascension party three days hence in Amber... this reeks of Pattern usage...

One of my favourite Pattern powers but no one seems to use it. I forget this trick when playing and it is so handy to use when you don't have a card for someone. And there doesn't seem to be a reason why it should be just a message. Why not an army? Get them in Shadow then sic them on any foe you wish....

Brian can hear the breathing and slight shifting of feet on the dusty floor of the room beyond the door. He senses a tension in the people and all seem to be on the far side of the room. The raven only radiates a slight, uncertain sense of danger.
Opening the door a crack and with a loud squeak, he sees four German soldiers with guns in their hands, all facing the door and ready to fire.
"Come out!" one calls, "There is no need to hide now that we have heard your sneaking about."

I Grab a large Cooking Cauldron and scoop up some debris quickly. I then open the door tossing the Cauldron and debris at the Germans. Disadvantaging their plan of attack. I roll to the ground and to the side allowing the mercenaries to shoot the now cleared path at the soldiers. Once I roll into the room I fire taking aim for the one who was stupid enough to speak.

The cauldron distracts them slightly. Brian jumps and rolls getting his shot off, the mercs follow behind guns a'blazing. In seconds the four German soldiers are dead and one merc has his face blown off. The noise of the battle must have been heard outside the building.
The fog still hangs thick in the room and through broken windows little can be seen. A bitter smoke flavour in in the fog, a remnant of the burning portions of the city.
"Four to one. Not bad," a surviving merc says while bandaging up a cut on his arm.

I make a quick check on the bodies of the soldiers who were killed. Looking for anything useful for intelligence purposes.
I look to Shelly and Lor. "Lets get moving quickly." I look to the others. "Give us a good window of time with your distraction. Hopefully we find Dorian and Gerard quickly enough." I Shake hands with the others. "If all your plans fail die well."

Lore follows Brian upstairs once the shooting stops. She grabs the coat and belt, the helmet and gun from one of the enemy soldiers. As long as no-one gets a good look at her it will function as a passable disguise...

As long as no-one gets a good look at her it will function as a passable disguise... Brian looks at Lor with a slight frown. " Ok. Follow me lets see if I can find where Dorian is at." I turn to the mercenaries. "Good luck."
I guide Lor and Shelly behind me as I use the Pattern to try to find Dorian. Doing my best to walk through the city in the process using shadow and cover whenever I can.My feathered friend alerting me if I need to break the path because of an obstruction in my way.
Buildings, Carts, Armored Vehicles, Cars, Motorcycles, all matter of detritus of battle to use for concealment. The Soldiers delayed my path. But I suppose returning Dorian for Flora's party would be the proper thing to do.

While following Brian, passing one of the motorcycles with a sidecar, obscured by the fog, Lorelei notices a cache of grenades on a stick - they kinda look like maracas - and liberates them... they might come in useful... .

Kasaba remains encased in the thick smog. The street lights can barely pierce the stuff, and it hangs heavy over the city. The streets are silent and undamaged from war. Only vandalism mars the streets and buildings.
Unable to get a clear sight of his surroundings, Brian has difficulty shifting the shadows to Dorian. He has to rely on feel more than vision, and progress is slow. As they cross the city, they pass destroyed areas, a block or two burnt or bombed-out but all look normal outside those areas. Some groups of german soldiers pass them as they walk, all nod or salute the group depending on what ranks they have chosen to wear and how visible they are in the fog.
A sudden breeze blows od newspapers and rubbish about them; from a blown-up mailbox, a letter flies into Lorelei's hand. Her invitation to Flora's party.
A group of songbirds fly about, holding a necklace of flowers in their beaks. They descend to Shelly and place the chain about her neck. Attached is her invitation to the ball. Also included is a Trump card for Flora.
"Someone's going to a lot of trouble to try and get us to this party."she grumbles.

Brian pauses and mutters. This mess was distracting. He takes the card for Flora. He reaches out with his psyche to the card trying to figure out how they work.
