My longest running characters have blended 2 things, Chinese historical figures from the warring states period to have a different flavor to everyone's western based characters and an interest in something that will flesh out the world in which we are playing. Karlsen is a scientist/engineer (based on Guan Yu) who wants to investigate Pattern/Power phenomena fleshing out how Patter works and what can be done with it. Xu Liang (based on Zhuge Liang) is a sorcerer who uses his Chi sorcery to get things done creating new elements in how sorcery works in conjunction with Pattern. In previous incarnations he was older and had done military service and built a network of business/ambassadorial contacts. This time I decided to to the wide eyed newcomer to see if I can do a 'Hero's journey' story line.
I was considering a truly strange character, but it is a bit risky proposing such a character to a GM you don't know very well. I was thinking of a 'Dark Horse' character from Chaos that walking the Logrus had blasted his physical body into a shadow form of a horse. Anything he had to manipulate would be done with Logrus strands, if he could be bothered to do so. It was loosely based on a Zelazny character, Typhon, in one of his books Creatures of Light and Darkness.
