"People said the same about me. That attitude didn't really make things great for Amber or for any of us."
He empties the glass in one gulp then pours another, which he drinks slower.
"That's the stuff," he says appreciatively.
"This is my face. Unlike my siblings, I have only the one.
"I'm here because...because..." Eric is at a loss for words for a moment.
"I remember something. After the battle, the wyverns...I came here for a reason. Maybe you know what happened? There was the Black Road, but I see that it is gone now."
This is the first time Calvera has ever seen his father look confused and unsure of himself.

"The difference is Eric took the throne. Benedict refuses too, I offered him my support and loyalty and he ignored it. He won't take the throne and he won't say who he is saving it for. Amber needs a king, or Queen I suppose. We are all at risk while that chair sits empty. My Father knew that, he filled the void."
"But you are not my father.
"He died when I was just a boy on this mountain. Defending Amber from the invaders along the black road. Weakened by the Wyvern venom and then drained down to hell by the Jewel of Judgement he wore. If Corwin's self serving book is to be believed."

I had to wait and build up my alliances, know who would back me and who I could defeat if they opposed me. I don't doubt Benedict is doing the same."He goes back to being forgetful and confused. "Corwin, he ruled after me for a time, yes? I remember him kneeling above me as I bled. He's gone now. I am supposed to tell you that we know you were sent to his realm. Remember that place! You will need to return there soon. That's what it wanted me to say to you. Corwin's Paris. The Bay of Kasaba. We are dead and yet we live."Eric stands up and walks haphazardly about the fire with his hand to his forehead. "There was something else I wanted to say."His wanderings take him back to the edge of the clearing. Wolves howl in the distance.

"I was there, in the sky above a strange Paris. Deirdre's ghost came to tell us something but she was hunted down by hellhounds."
I walk to the edge of the clearing my self and cut a few more saplings. My heavy hunting knife takes them down in one swipe.
"Wolves don't normally hunt this high up a mountain. Do you know where Martin is? Who sent you Eric? Or what?"
I trim my spears quickly and put a rude point on them. Not very strong, nor will they fly true over any great distance but I could throw one clean threw a bull at anything less than 100 feet.
I hand him half my spears if he will take them. Does he have a weapon?
"Who sent you Eric? Who is moving against Amber, and who sends ghosts to protect it?"

#s://i~ibb~co/t4864LS/a042bd0a834323f81a25e7c5e95577c4~jpg The skies of Amber are overcast as usual in these troubled times. Who knows when Tir-na'nogth will appear again? Eric smiles as he hears the howls of the wolves. "My friends roam here still, protecting this land.
"I don't know who this Martin person is; is he someone important? Another brother appearing from out of the depths of shadow?
"Who sent me?" he muses as his form begins to fade. "It made me just to tell you these things: Corwin, Kasaba, dead and living," he paraphrases himself. "It broke the rules by forming me, it really shouldn't have done that. The Logrus will be pissed." Eric manages to say before fading away completely.

Did the pattern make a ghost of my father?
Why? To warn me obviously but so vague. Could the pattern even do that? Wait would the pattern do that? Could it even do? Did the pattern have its own volition, its own plans?
I walked to the edge of the cliff and looked out over the bay, there were still some ships lanterns cutting across the waves.
Some other the others went in for this mystical bullshit, cosmic balance, the Pattern and the Logurs moving through some elaborate dance. A chess game on a cosmic scale. Clearly I am a piece in their game. Only a pawn I think. We all know that a lowly pawn can advance down to the last rank and become the queen. But the queen is still just a piece. Moving where someone else moves it.
I want off this board.
I'm done with this metaphor. But I still hate being manipulated.
I pick up the bottle of whiskey but instead of draining it I hurl it off the Mountain into the night sky.
The pattern locked in some kind of contest with the Logrus. Clearly I am a champion of Order. I am being positioned by the Unicorn and ghosts sent by the pattern.
Fighting against their plans has been futile. So how do I get to Corwin's Paris? Wait did Eric say Corwin was dead?
I look for a moon, no Tir Na Nog tonight. The dream city above Amber should be close to the dream city above Paris, I could walk and be there tonight. I think, shadows follow their own logic, dreams too for that matter. Perhaps it is better that there is no moon.

My frustration got the better of me there on that mountain and I screamed my anger into the night sky. Nothing is easy, nothing goes my way it seams.
But there was no help for it. If I started now I could climb down to the harbour in time to catch a ship leaving on the morning tide. It didn't matter where it was going, all ships took me where I wanted to go.
With one last glance at the sky to see if the fates would make it easy on me I started down the mountain.

It is a long walk down the mountain and dangerous in the darkness, exposed roots, large rocks and suddenly appearing crevasses interrupt his path down. Some parts are easier to traverse with sections of ancient walls from earlier designs of castle Amber, portions of old buildings, towers and guardhouse, terraces built into the cliff face from some long-abandoned garden leading on to the outskirts of the city and finally to the port as the sun begins to rise above the waves.
The docks are busy with hands loading the last of the cargoes on board and sailors preparing the ships to be off. Guild agents talk with captains and dock foremen, bulls drag drunken sailors back to their waiting craft. His first attempts to gain passage on the ships is denied as they are carrying cargo but no passengers. A stevedore gives some advice.
"Rough time to be looking for a way out of town, Prince. Benedict has all the fleet out on patrol since the passing of the King and Queen," he pauses to make the sign of the Unicorn over his heart, "I could say, but really don't want to, y' see, that you could try talkin' to Barrett on the Antelope; he's always got room to stuff another passenger in his wreck. She's berthed on pier 4 about halfway down."

I walked down the water front til I found the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen, her sails were practically rags and she was listing to the port even tied at the dock. But if I took passage on this ship I could sleep until I was far enough away from Amber to start shifting shadow. I was exhausted from my trip down the mountain in the dark and dawn is when it always hits me hardest.
I strode up the gang way and found the Captain supervising some cargo being loaded. "Berth or bunk Captain Barrett, I need to take passage on this ship and don't much care what style I do so."
I held out a couple coins from the middle lands where I am a war lord. They were strange to anyone in the golden circle, but they were gold, it should be enough. "If you have some show me where I can lay my head, I'll stay out of your way and you can finnish loading. I know my way around a ship, I won't be under foot."

"I wouldn't dream of charging for the honour of carrying one of the royal family, Prince Calvera," the captain says.
"This is quite a day for the Antelope; your royal cousin Lady Eivor is also on this cruise. Unfortunately for you, Benedict has already booked her in the stateroom, so you will need to bunk in with the rest of the passengers. As yet, none of them has shown up even though we're scheduled to sail very soon."

Calvera feels the pressure of Trump contact as he is coming on board the Antelope...

My first instinct was to strike out of course. But I held that, I had gone up to the high mountain hoping Bleys would contact me. It just made sense that he would fumble the timing. But I still needed to talk to him. I walked calmly to the side of the ship away from activity and did something I had only done a handful of times, opened myself to Trump contact. (While griping the handle of my knife in the small of my back, just in case.)
[Assuming I know who is calling]
"Kali's tits Hammett what happened to your face?"

Hammett chuckles, “Calvera! I’m glad you are alright!” He motions to his face, “A stupid cousin of our caused this when he blew up himself and the castle.” He goes serious, remembering, “I don’t know if you have heard. King Random And Queen Vail have been killed.”

"Someone did tell me you were in the castle at the time. Glad you're alive. Gerard is dead too, maybe Corwin as well, Martin can't be found. It doesn't seem to be a good time to carry the blood of the Unicorn.
And Benedict is just squatting over the throne like a toad. He won't take it for himself and won't say who he means to have it.
So what's your plan Hammett, how can I help you today?"
