Lorelei says, "Possessing the Jewel... I cannot imagine anything that can HOLD her without her consent." .

Cody grimaces, "Consent is a complex thing. Proper informed consent when you have all your wits about you is ideal. Unfortunately, there are times when we of Amber and or Chaos blood work hard to deceive each other. Lapses in memory, all the way to full blown amnesia happen. Magical beguiling... Then, from what I've heard, prolonged exposure to the Jewel can lead to madness. Somewhat akin to the madness of a failed Logrus attempt, I imagine."
"So, although Coral may be the chosen one. She may not be in her right mind."
Considering the Mirror Coms, "I don't suppose you have any way to contact your brother?"

"I have been trying to contact Merlin, so far without success. I know you are going to suggest I talk to him about Coral. It is a reasonable suggestion. And I still need to speak with him on Dionisia's behalf. My options are becoming rather slim. I could ask someone who has walked a True Pattern to have a creature of desire carry one of my mirrors to him. I could walk in Shadow seeking him which could take years. Or I could risk using a Broken Pattern to teleport to him and hope it works properly...," Lorelei lists her options.

"On behalf of my fellow Pit-Divers I was on my way to Thelbane to petition the powers that be to do something about our terrible working conditions when I was approached by someone's minion and eventually directed to leave the Courts. And to take a more active role in resolving this crisis..."
Cody strokes his chin and remembers more of his conversation with Princess Fiona.
"Being hunted in a strange Shadow, being stuck with a crossbow bolt and winding up in Fiona's parlor so quickly. It's all a bit of a blurr."
"But she said something which thinking back on it makes it appear as though it was all some sort of amusement for her. I was chased down a blind alley with two doors. I chose her door and she commented something to the effect that she and Merlin had a bet that I would, choose HER door."
"As though, if I had gone through the other door I would have met Merlin instead..."
Cody shakes his head in disbelief.
"That seems vain of me to think that I am important enough to have both of them vying for me?"
"In hindsight I should have stayed a little longer and checked to see what, or who was behind doorway number two."
"Damn!" Cody uselessly shakes his fists.
"Now I want to march straight back to Thelbane and talk to Merlin myself."
Cody gestures as though he is choaking Merlin.
"Just, not until after I speak to Regent Florimel first..."
"I mean, I've come all this way already."

Lorelei puts on a sardonic smile, "Truly, it wouldn't do to only want to strangle one side..." .

Cody snort-laughs,"Well, yeah. But I don't expect to see her anytime soon."
"If the Black Road still exists, it would be a quick route back to the Courts. Assuming that you could travel it unharrassed. Stealth would slow you down and tracking and mapping it would be quite a project. Gaining control of it would be an accomplishment." Cody gets a momentary gleam in his eye.

"I would advise keeping such an achievement secret... After what happened the first time it was used, the family would be less than pleased to know it could happen again," Lorelei cautions.

"Easier said than done. And, I meant you, not me. I mean... If you need to get to the Courts quickly you could try using some of the remnants of the Black Road as a short cut."
Cody rubs his chin in contemplation.
"I haven't seen one of your Broken Patterns, let alone the real one. But as you told me, the prevailing theory is that they are reflections or projections of the true Pattern cast out into Shadows. The farther out they are, the more broken."
"I wonder how much of the breaks are simply due to the relative positions in Shadow from the True Pattern and how much are the lingering effects of the Black Road and the corruption of the True Pattern that Brand caused. How similar are traveling the Black Road and traveling with Broken Pattern? Neither are a stroll through the garden, so you may already have some mastery."

Lorelei stands silent for several moments, obviously thinking. "Looking into that idea when I can spare the time could prove valuable. Assuming it worked, it would allow me to take a mirror there for instantaneous access afterwards. The problem is we are talking about several weeks at a time for the initial attempt with no guarantee of success."
"As for the rest of it, I can take you to the Broken Pattern I walked..." .

Cody considers the long journey back to the Courts, "Well... A little coms mirror is one thing but a transport mirror would be better. Obviously you don't want to lug a big fragile mirror all the way there while trying to explore the remnants of the Black Road. There are plenty of mirrors in the Courts that you can polish up and work your magic on."
In the lessons Cody has taken regarding Logrus there was much concern that Cody's raw Abyss Power would interact with the Logrus in unpredictable and violent ways. This spilled over into how the Abyss Power may clash with Pattern as well. So far, Cody has found a great deal of resistance to using Abyssal Power so close to the Pattern. Walking the Pattern is out of the question at the moment due to the uncertainty, but a broken Pattern may not be. If it helped Cody negotiate Shadows closer to Amber and enhance his Abyssal Powers in this region? Maybe?
At the very least it would give Cody a good look at one and try to test his theory that the breaks were related to the Black Road.
"Yes, I'd like to see a Broken Pattern and get a sense of whether it is tainted by the Black Road."
"You've got appointments to keep and I've got my crew to take care of but we can join forces in a day or two if the fates allow."

That settled, Lorelei leads Cody to his crew. She squeezes his hand briefly in parting...
With Cody going into the establishment that she will not enter, Lorelei uses her compact's mirror to try contacting the one Ovid now carries... .

Cody follows Lorelei through the castle and out into the slightly dimmed City of Rebma. The blanked-out mirrors give the city a twilight evening glow rather than the sparkle of midday he vaguely recalls from the sleep/wake/dream visit so long ago. Without the aid of mirror reflections additional lighting has been installed, but it isn't the same.
So good to be here in the flesh, Cody recognizes some of the familiar sights and scenes and notes some subtle and not so subtle changes. Moving further from the Castle than he had gone before and into unfamiliar parts, Cody takes extra care to make sure he will be able to navigate on his own.
While taking in the sights Cody quietly listens to Lorelei as she points out different aspects of the city; giving a running commentary on different shops and their proprietors, various government institutions, neighbourhoods and other establishments.
"Thank you Lorelei. I hope to catch up with you soon in Amber." Cody receives and returns the hand squeeze and then turns to enter the 'Terror'.

Ovid will open his mirror looking at it, "Yes ?" If he can see who it is, "Ah hello Princess Lorelei." He regards her through the looking glass.
