"Magic?! Well, I suppose to could be so considering all the strange people and things that have been coming into the city these last few years but I've always assumed that they were a Kasaba thing and had not spread to the rest of the world."
Hammett then gets the sensation of someone trying to reach him through a trump connection.

"If it is here in Kasaba, then there is a good chance of it being everywhere. Even in the hands of the Germans and the Major. In fact--"
Hammett feels the attempted trump contact. Never when he was alone. Always with company. Just his luck. He considered blocking it, but Gerard's warning was still fresh in his mind... Hammett sighs.
"--In fact, you are going to see some of it right now, Renault. Please don't panic."
Hammett opens himself to the contact, "Hello?"

Brennon is on the other end of the trump, his right forearm wrapped under the arms of a man in train service uniform, and whose face is a bloodied mess.
"Hammett? I finally found someone whose head is as hard as my fist. There's demons trying to tear into this car, and I have the guy who did the murders, but we're both going to need some medical attention. Him more than, me; I had to be a bit rough. I don't want to stay on this train where it's going, and I don't want to try jumping it with a broken hand. Since the man's unconscious, does that mean you can bring us both through?" No mention yet of the reason for the demons' presence. Yes, Gerard wanted the papers, but if they aren't concealed on the conductor somewhere, they're certainly secreted somewhere safe, and Gerard can get them himself if the conductor lives to be interrogated.

[[OOC: From amberunleashed.freeforums.net/thread/29/bre02-ham02-kasaba-saturday-night?page=8&scrollTo=536]]The small launch has four oarsmen and one lieutenant giving orders. Aside from the occasional muffled command for a change in course nothing else is said during the trip. Around the small bot are the larger ships, some still dark and quiet like ghosts, others active, some sailing slowly against the tide hoping to get free of the bay, other fishing ships are out beginning another day of casting nets. The sun is above the horizon and long shadows are cast across the quay when Hammett steps ashore. A few of the usual dack crowd is about doing the usual thing they do some illicit but most legal. He recognizes a few of the faces. [/font]

Hammett nods or greets those he knows as he makes his way off the docks. He flags down a taxi to take him up to Renault's office.
Once there he enters and asks the desk officer if Renault is still in his office.

Arriving at the police station he finds the place astir. A pall of smoke rings the place and the fire department is just finishing putting out the flames. Police move about seriously trying to keep gawkers back from the station. Hammett can't see Renault about but he does recognize the desk sergeant who also recognizes him. The sergeant beckons over Hammett with a wave of his hand.

Damn. Hammett makes his way over to the desk sergeant. "Are you okay? What happened and where is Renault?"

"You don't know?" he says, "the station was attacked at set to fire. Captain Renault is missing."
He gestures to a pair of gendarmes and they approach, one with a pair of handcuffs for Hammett's wrists.
"You were seen entering the Captain's office moments before the attack, not seen leaving the building and now here you are. I am sorry, Monsieur Hammett, but you are our main suspect."

Hammett looks surprised, "Sergeant ((His name) I don't think we've mentioned it yet but Hammett would know it), you know me. I have been good friends with Captain Renault for years. I would never do something like this or anything to him. I was called away from my meeting with the Captain by Prince Gerard of Amber, and Princes of Amber do not use normal means of travel." He motions to the taxi that just dropped him off, "Ask the taxi driver where he picked me up just now, and then ask Prince Gerard's men down at the dock where they just ferried me from and how long I was on the flag ship."
If logic and their shared history isn't enough to give the man pause, Hammett will try and put out a bit of Psychic "good will and trust" to the desk sergeant.
"The men behind this attack must have been the same ones who killed the Agents of Amber on the train. They are looking to start a conflict and are currently succeeding. I can find them and stop them, and rescue Captain Renault. But I will have to start now and work quickly."
He looks at the men who have now arrived with the handcuffs, "And I can't do that while waiting for you to check my alibi. By that time it may be too late."
He waits to see the Desk Sergeant's reply, but might act if they try and handcuff him.

"I want to agree with you Hammett but we have protocols for these sorts of situations. Maybe the disappearance of the Captain is unrelated to the fire, yes? Understand that I have a wife and children what will happen to them if I lose this job?"
He waves the man with the handcuffs back a few steps.
"I can bring you in without the handcuffs, yes? A risk to my career but you are correct in that you deserve the benefit of the doubt."

Hammett nods in sympathy for the man's situation, plus it wouldn't hurt to learn any more details that the police might know.
"I understand. And thank you."
He then motions that he is ready to go along with the Sergeant.

The gendarmes lead Hammett to a nearby warehouse.
"The station is unusable until repairs are made. This place will have to be our temporary station," the sergeant says.
Hammett is taken to a small office on the ground floor which has been hastily turned into a jail cell. A cot, small desk and two chairs are in a room illuminated by a single uncovered lightbulb dangling on an electrical cord. An out-of-date calendar hangs on the wall.
"Wait. You'll be questioned soon." the desk sergeant says sadly.

Hammett sighs at the bleak surroundings then takes a seat. He pulls out his trump cards and draws out Brennon’s. He needed to warn him that the people who attacked the police station would probably come looking for the conductor soon enough. They found and reached the police station very quickly. They must be able to track the conductor somehow. It wouldn't take them long to locate Brennon’s ship.
He focused his attention in the card. Attempting to make contact.

Strangely, Hammett is unable to contact Brennon. Some source of interference blocks the connection. Not similar to a mental block of the connection but not entirely dissimilar either.
