Calvera studies the patterns of the board and snaggs another squid. Chasing with vinegar.
"We're both civilized men, men of honor, I have enjoyed our talk and our game. You've given me a wider appreciation for shadow. But we both know I can't let your army just ride out of here, you've left a trail of blood and ashes from here to wherever you crossed into this shadow. Now we've brought you to battle. The only way you are getting off of this flood plain is through yonder army.
There is away you could save your men. Fight me in a duel, if you lose, you have my word your men can lay down arms. After a short time I will lead them out of this shadow, on to Amber or Uncle Bleys who ever we find first. If you win I will be in no position to guarantee anything, but my personal troops will be demoralized and my alliance will fracture, each Captain struggling for dominance, even the good ones unsure of his neighbours. Should be another easy victory for you."
"You General are going to die, either with you men or instead of them."

"Prince Bleys has told me much about your family so you will forgive my doubting your word." the General dryly replies. "You will do what you will do but need I remind you of my alliance with your uncle? The Prince also told me of your families penchant for revenge.
"How about this: my army will withdraw from your lands and go to Prince Bleys. You need only to show us which direction."

"If Uncle Bleys has told you anything of our family you know we treat people like you as tools, nothing more, to be used or discarded according to the task at hand. Bleys has no use for you now, and no one seeks vengence when an invading army over reaches and is destroyed by the native defenders.
If you had come differently, if you had sent messengers, you might have been able to walk out of here. But you didn't, you sent panic as your herald and famine will follow behind."
He stands.
"You will be wiped out by this river and if anyone hears the tale they will know 2 things. The scales of Karma have been balanced, and only a fool crosses a Prince of Amber."
Calvera smashes the tea pot down on the table and turns his back on the coward, daring him to attack. At the signal his army starts a general advance. He stalks back to his arming stand for his sword and spear, contemptuous of the army and its general at his back.
[If the General does rush him, he'll fight with gloves and dagger.]

"More of your arrogance to think that all of you kind think as you do. Would the honour of the Unicorn be passed to us if we were mere tools? We were warned of the foolishness of Erik and his brood. Now you and this world will suffer."
The general makes a gesture himself behind Calvera's back and the invading, turning his knees to water and his guts to mush. The invading army begins a keening ululating yell which reverberates in the valley. Calvera feels a force push him down. As he staggers he can see the frontlines of his army fall to the ground many of the soldiers bleeding from their mouths and ears.

Should have know there was more to them if their crusade crossed that much of shadow.
Calvera felt the wet earth under his gloved hands and the force pressing him down into it. He shoved himself back to his feet and shouted AEIOUB (process interupt). He turned back to the General and drew his knife. At least one of them would die. He could cross that space before the Demon could make it to his tetsubo.
With his fist step a single rocket flailed accross the sky overhead. At least someone among the defenders had the presence of mind to fire, he was glad they had deployed on the reverse slope even though the invades didn't seem to have artillery.

With the Power Word spoken Calvera feels the weight of the spell rise from him and he is able to move quickly enough towards the General's mace. The General recovers from his surprise at Calvera's recovery fast enough to throw the table into Calvera's way. Food and stones go flying but barely hampers the Prince of Amber's run.
About them the armies of the Daant charge towards the falling defenders of the shadow. Calvera's calvary flanks the invading mob and drive deep into their lines sending grey bodies and red blood through the air. Yet they are soon pulled down from their mounts and torn to pieces by the ravening mob of fanatics.
"My people have the spirit of the Unicorn in them; your armies are no match for the truly enlightened." the General says as his front line of warriors engages Calvera's defenders. The sound of battle washes over them in a wave yet the soldiers themselves keep away from the area around Calvera and the General.

Calvera circles his target, knife held low point out, left hand pawed gently at the air, he'll wait for a moment for the General to make the first strike, but he know he doesn't have all day. He is aware of the battle turning quickly against his forces, while it hangs in the balance the armies may respect this duel but if it turns into a rout he'll be overwhelmed.
If he has to he'll press riskier and riskier attacks trusting his speed [Strength] to recover or carry it home before the General can counter.
(Sounds like the defenders are loosing. Why? Are the attackers that much stronger man for man? Or did Calvera get out generaled? Or did the voice attack lay my forces out completely? Or other?)

[OOC: whatever the magic voice was it did allow the General's forces to deliver the first blow but the day is still young...]
With the path to his weapon blocked the General improvises by grabbing his standard and using it as a spear to keep Calvera back.
"Why continue the fight? My High Priest of the Unicorn wields magics that melt your people. Save their lives and yield."

Calvera just grins. He darts in trying to get past the point of the spear, left hand open to catch the haft if possible (blade if not).

The General is good; he dodges to the side and swings the shaft hoping to knock Calvera down. Calvera takes a strike against his gloved forearm before grabbing hold of the spear. Calvera has the general at his mercy now unless the invader has the ability to suddenly run very fast.

At his mercy is a bad place to be for he has none. He strikes low, the point of his dagger finding the edge of the breastplate at the groin and stabbing up into his guts. A gut wound like that can be ugly for a long time but with the withdraw Calvera slices open the inner thigh nearly to the knee. With a cut to the femoral artery a mortal man or even a Prince of Amber will bleed out in less than a minute.
Calvera strikes like an adder, and reciols just as quick. With a clean strike he will normally even avoid the blood spray.

#s://i~ibb~co/Rc3rW6y/depositphotos-74499351-stock-illustration-rampant-unicorn-a-illustration-of~jpg The General has that surprised expression that Calvera has often seen on the faces of his many dying foes. "Even after all this it was true what they said." he says. "Even death won't stop me, stop the Unicorn, or change your fate." are his last words. The battle pauses, a silence falls, and Calvera has a few seconds to see the field covered in the dead and dying from both armies. Two different colours of blood mingle on the ground and seep into the soil. A horse with one leg torn off hobbles about and whinnies pathetically as its' life bleeds out. Then sound returns as the sky begins to strobe black and white, an oscillating brightness that would drive animals mad. Soldiers from both sides fall to the ground and cover their eyes. Calvera remains standing and sees the Unicorn coalesce in front of him. Giant, it stands rampant and paws the air and stares at him through one eye, looking almost identical to the image painted on the back of the family tarots.

One of the disadvantages of a dagger over a sword is you can't salute with it. So Calvera snaps up a linen napkin from the remains of his lunch, wipes the blade and sheiths it behind his back, before bowing to the Unincorn. Open hand over closed fist presented before him in the style of KungFu masters, and Saffron palidins of this shadow.
[Is the Unicorn missing an Eye?]

#s://i~ibb~co/Rc3rW6y/depositphotos-74499351-stock-illustration-rampant-unicorn-a-illustration-of~jpg [Sorry, I meant to describe that the Unicorn was in profile. But a one-eyed Unicorn gives me ideas...] The Unicorn continues to grow in size, quickly becoming larger than the crude statue the invaders had created, its snorts split the air, its hooves crack reality as it fully manifests in this world and Calvera glimpses what lays beyond his shadow. It's a sight that could drive a man mad. Then the Unicorn turns to face Calvera. All falls silent. It takes no notice of the salute. Its form begins to shrink back to its usual size. Then with horn down it charges at Calvera.

It's not every day you end up being charged by one of the fundamental forces of creation. His uncles might have made sardonic comments. Calvera just grins.
He pulls his blade again and stands tall. Holding the napkin before him like a bullfighter. Dagger hidden behind it.
Her vision will be worse and worse the closer she is. He'll move at the last possible moment.
[How big is a unicorn? Deer sized, horse sized? Also, male or female creature?]
